Netball Super League | UWS Sirens set to make Super Club debut

UWS Sirens are all set for their Super Club competition debut in New Zealand.

Eight athletes, Claire Brownie, Emily Nicholl, Ella Gibbons, Nicola McCleery, Hayley Mulheron, Kelly Boyle, Bethan Goodwin and Emma Barrie, will be competing under the UWS Sirens name and will battle it out against the top three ANZ premiership finishers and four other international clubs between 19-24th August in Nelson.

For some of these athletes, it’s been an incredibly busy year in their netball career with World Cup Qualifiers back in January, 2018 Vitality Netball Superleague, Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and now they’ve made the journey to New Zealand to compete against some of the best clubs in the world.

It’s an exciting opportunity for UWS Sirens being the only Vitality Netball Superleague franchise this year to compete in the Super Club competition.

Kiwi Coach Gail Parata for the UWS Sirens select squad during the Super Club competition said: “The Netball Super Club competition is an excellent initiative developed by Netball New Zealand and we are so excited to be competing in it this year.

“It is a great opportunity for our Scottish athletes to gain valuable experience playing against the top club teams in New Zealand and experience a variety of different styles of play from the other teams competing.

“Currently it is our off-season but an occasion such as the Netball Super Club was a challenge we are really keen to be involved in, and to test our athletes against some of the world’s best.

“On a personal note, I am excited to be returning home and I get the opportunity to show off some Kiwi hospitality to the team and management, many whom are first time visitors to New Zealand.”

Claire Nelson, CEO of UWS Sirens and Netball Scotland said: “We’re delighted to be sending out a UWS Sirens Select squad to the Netball Super Club Competition in New Zealand.

“As we head into a new Vitality Netball Superleague Season, and more importantly, a Netball World Cup year, it is imperative that we expose our national athletes to as much top-flight netball as possible, and this international competition offers a unique opportunity to play amongst and against some of the best club athletes in our sport.

“It will give our players an excellent start to their pre-season preparations and I wish them the best of luck out there.

“We will be cheering them on from home.”
