Share Wasps Netball have announced that Sophia Candappa will return to the club for the 2021 season. Candappa will also captain the two-time Superleague winners as they hunt for a fourth Grand Final appearance third title. Candappa, who is a popular figure in the game said of her return to Wasps, “I am thrilled to be returning to Wasps for my fifth season. “Being part of the Wasps family for the last five years has been so enjoyable and I am really excited at the prospect of this upcoming season. I believe we have a team who have the potential and are determined to win back the Superleague trophy.” Candappa took a short break from the game after giving birth to her first child and returned to the Wasps in 2020 and credits the franchise for the support she received and being able to return to elite sport. “As a player, I am looking forward to returning to the court after the birth of my first child, and thank the Club for all the support they have provided me so far. I feel I have got a lot more to give and it is a massive honour to have been named captain.” Mel Mansfield, who enters her third season as Wasps Head Coach, said: “Not only are we delighted to have Sophia back with us, we are ecstatic for her to lead the team as captain this year. Her vision, dedication and caring nature always made her a first choice this season.” Candappa, who is the Player Rep Chair for the Netball players Association has already has demonstrated her ability to lead and for Mansfield, her commitment to the team was key. “Sophia is a natural leader, a player’s voice and always has the best interests of the squad at heart. Sophia is looking fantastic in training. Sadly her return to play after baby Otis was hindered last year due to the short season.
