What did we learn on day one of the Vitality Netball Nations Cup?

With so many Vitality Netball Superleague players in action on day one of the Vitality Netball Nations Cup in Nottingham, we’ve taken a look at what we can learn and what we can expect to see in the 2020 season.

Fisher means business

Although she didn’t start the game, Saracens Mavericks’ George Fisher made an instant impact when she entered the action.

Replacing her Mavericks teammate Kadeen Corbin in the second quarter, the 6ft 2” GA/GS went about her business coolly despite the thousands of fans cheering every shot.

Her calmness and precision in the circle stood out for the Vitality Roses and, if she can replicate that sort of ruthlessness in the domestic season, then Saracens Mavericks could be on course to improve on their two consecutive fifth-place finishes.

A rumble of Thunder in the midcourt

It may only be early days in the career of Amy Carter but already with one Superleague title and a Roses debut to her name, the Macclesfield-born player looks like one to watch.

Her introduction to the game against the current World Champions was her first cap for the national side and, despite the formidable opposition and the electric atmosphere inside the arena, Carter looked comfortable and as if she belonged at that level.

Her performance had fans raving on social media and her Superleague coach glowing with pride.

With Thunder looking to retain their Superleague title, it may be early days but it looks they may have a new international star to run their midcourt.

Shrewd business by Dragons

Another young player to watch will be Celtic Dragons and Jamaican defender Latanya Wilson. Entering the game late on, Wilson displayed the calmness and defensive prowess that will provide a solid platform for the Welsh side to build on.

With only three caps to her name, the 19-year-old may not have been a household name for many. However, Dragons saw something and the early capture of Wilson’s signature looks to be a smart one.

South Africa were trying to come back into the game and, with netball superstar Shamera Sterling forced out of the game with an injury, they probably thought their chances improved. However, Wilson took to the court and the change was seamless. Despite the experience and talent in the South African attack, Wilson helped marshal a strong Jamaican defence and secure the win.

The Vitality Netball Nations Cup continues tonight when the Jamaica face New Zealand and the Vitality Roses take on South Africa.
