Netball Super League | Strathclyde Sirens’ Gia Abernethy returns for new season

Strathclyde Sirens’ Gia Abernethy will be back in the black dress for the 2022 Vitality Netball Superleague (VNSL) season, the club have confirmed.

Abernethy is now going into her fourth season as a Sirens player and has played the last two as captain, having been given the role at the beginning of the 2020 campaign.

The mid-courter arrived in the Superleague with a wealth of experience after representing Adelaide Thunderbirds in Suncorp Super Netball and running out for Australia’s U21 squad.

Abernethy helped propel the club to its greatest-ever VNSL finish last season thanks to her performance and leadership qualities, winning two Player of the Match awards during the season.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to re-sign with the Strathclyde Sirens again for season 2022,” she said.

“I can’t wait to see this team continue to grow and take on any challenge in front of us. We’re creating a culture where we won’t back down against anyone and playing another season in Sirens colours only fuels this excitement moving forward.

“The Sirens Tribe have been incredible, the buzz and support on social media is something we are definitely noticing and we love hearing from everybody. We can’t wait to play in front on them at the Emirates again.”

The 27-year-old has been a firm fan-favourite since joining the Scottish outfit and has taken on the mantle of an ‘adopted Scot’. Sirens Head Coach, Lesley MacDonald, recognised her qualities and described her as ‘the ultimate leader, relentlessly pushing herself and the team for success’.

“I’m delighted to have Gia back in for another Sirens season. Her passion, her mid-court craft and her leadership are standout qualities for the Sirens,” said MacDonald.

“After a tremendous 2021 season, I am looking forward to working with Gia and pushing for consistent back-to-back seasons.”

Abernethy becomes Strathclyde Sirens’ fourth signing of the 2022 Signing Window after Towera Vinkhumbo, Emma Barrie and Taylor McKevitt. You can see the Sirens squad as it develops here.
