Both Mvula and Vinkhumbo have been standout players in the VNSL over the last few seasons and have been rewarded with a spot in Peace Kaluwa’s squad for this summer’s competition. The Malawi Queens have been placed in Group B and begin their campaign against hosts England in Birmingham on Saturday 30 July before going onto face Northern Ireland, New Zealand, Trinidad & Tobago, and Uganda. Mvula helped guide Manchester Thunder to the Superleague title last month having scored a massive 774 goals for her side en route to the Grand Final. The shooter finished second in the Gilbert Top Scorer leaderboard behind Proscovia Peace. Having won her second title, the 28-year-old announced shortly after the conclusion of the 2022 season that she would be joining ANZ Premiership side Central Pulse in New Zealand. Vinkhumbo, meanwhile, has enjoyed two exceptional seasons in Strathclyde Sirens’ defensive circle since her move to Scotland for the 2021 campaign. The impressive goal keeper came second for intercepts (64) and turnovers (116) in the league last term. In 2021 – when she won Players’ Player of the Season and was included in the All Star VII at the #VNSLAwards – she finished top for intercepts (60) and second for turnovers (93). This will be her fourth Commonwealth Games. The full squad is as follows: Jane Chimaliro, Sindi Simtowe, Tendai Masamba, Mwai Kumwenda, Joyce Mvula, Bridget Kumwenda, Takondwa Lwazi, Thandia Galeta, Shilla Dimba, Martha Dambo, Carlo Mtukule, Towera Vinkhumbo, Laureen Ngwira, Beauty Banda, Mada Mkandawire, Maggie Sikwese. The squads of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, South Africa, Jamaica, Wales, Trinidad and Tobago, and now Malawi will have Superleague stars feature in Birmingham with some nations yet to announce.
