All you need to know about the 2023 Netball Quad Series

The Netball Quad Series gets underway this weekend with England, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa ready to battle it out for the crown.

With the Netball World Cup on the horizon, four of the top teams in the world come together at the International Convention Centre in Cape Town for a tantalising few days of action.

The competition takes a round-robin format, concluding on the fourth day with the grand final and third and fourth-place playoff.

Australia took their sixth Quad Series title last time out in 2022, with New Zealand the only other nation to triumph since its inauguration in 2016.

With the top stars taking to the court in South Africa, there’s plenty of opportunity to see your favourite players get stuck into international competition.

Ones to watch

Fresh from her dazzling display against Jamaica, London Pulse’s Olivia Tchine steps into the shooting circle for England in Cape Town.

The 22-year-old played a full 60 minutes with 96% shooting accuracy in their second game against the Sunshine Girls and will once again be a key element of the Vitality Roses set-up.

2022 Super League Player of the Season Layla Guscoth will hold the fort for England in defence alongside rising star Funmi Fadoju of London Pulse, who is already a key figure in the Roses squad aged just 20.

The defensive duo will blend their experience and youth to cause chaos in the circle and disrupt some of the best shooters in the world.

Manchester Thunder’s Shadine van der Merwe and Lenize Potgieter are cornerstones for South Africa.

Potgieter made her Proteas debut at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and Super League fans will be eager to see how the shooter fares ahead of the 2023 season, signing for the reigning champions during the summer.

The South African pair could face Thunder teammate and Roses captain Natalie Metcalf on Sunday as the two teams go head-to-head.

Metcalf captained the Roses during the 2022 Commonwealth Games, narrowly losing out on a bronze medal to New Zealand and will be seeking revenge against the Silver Ferns in their final round-robin match on Tuesday.

But with England’s first game against Australia, Chelsea Pitman and Elle McDonald are also sure to come up against old friends on the court.

Pitman was born in Australia and has represented both the Diamonds and Roses at international level whist McDonald, who made her Roses debut last week, moved to live in Australia aged eight.

With 16 Super League players in action during the competition, and plenty more familiar faces, it’s sure to be an exciting week of netball in Cape Town.
