Netball Super League | Where to watch: Round 14 and 15

This weekend we’re celebrating Pride as we head into an important double-header round that could see a number of teams qualify for a place in the Final Four of the 2023 season.

We have five live games coming up this round, starting off with an exciting Friday Night Netball clash as Leeds Rhinos host Strathclyde Sirens live on Sky Sports Arena and YouTube.

Across the weekend, the Netball Super League will be taking part in its first ever league-wide Pride Round and as part of this, clubs across the league will come together to celebrate Pride in ways as unique as the netball community; through the decoration of venues, fundraising drives, merchandise stands and lots of other exciting, vibrant celebrations.

Leeds Rhinos vs Strathclyde Sirens

This Friday night, you’re in for a real treat as the two sides meet again in a rematch of their 52-52 draw – the first tied game in the NSL since Round 7 of the 2021 season.

Rhinos will be looking to bounce back after a challenging fixture against current league leaders Surrey Storm last week. One to watch in Liana Leota’s side will be Vicki Oyesola, who last week made her 50th appearance for the side. Oyesola is having a standout season, averaging more deflections, interceptions and turnovers than in her past two seasons with Rhinos.

Coming up against Oyesola is likely to be Bethan Goodwin for Strathclyde Sirens, another one to watch in this battle. The last time Rhinos took on Sirens, it was Scotland’s Goodwin who scored a goal in the dying seconds to bring up the draw. Goodwin has grown into her own this season, producing sensational performances under pressure but also improving on her consistency – averaging 10 more goals per game than she did last season, with her goal percentage improved by 3%.

Surrey Storm vs London Pulse

It’s do or die for both sides as they battle to become league leaders. With it all on the line, both Surrey Storm and London Pulse could qualify after this weekend’s double header round. A win for either Storm or Pulse would secure their place in the semi-finals, with a draw also guaranteeing both teams a top four finish.

Across their squads, both sides boast a host of impressive performers with England’s most capped player, Pulse’s Jade Clarke, featuring in this week’s Team of the Week alongside one of Surrey Storm’s star signings Sophie Drakeford-Lewis who also got the call up.

Defensively Storm are dominating the stats table, with three of the top ten for turnovers in the league in the Storm squad: Layla Guscoth (4th – 61), Amy Flanagan (9th – 44) and Leah Middleton (10th – 40). This match up against Pulse’s attacking end, stacked with England internationals, will be fiesty – as Jade Clarke, Chelsea Pitman and Liv Tchine are all likely to make an appearance and try to disrupt Storm’s dominance.

And it’s not just Storm who boast defensive prowess, Pulse’s Funmi Fadoju leads the way for deflections in the league, with 69, ahead of second- and third-placed Guscoth and Flanagan. Her match-up against the iconic shooting circle of Proscovia Peace (NSL leading goal scorer) and Drakeford-Lewis will be formidable.

History sits on Pulse’s side, winning five out of their last six meetings with Storm and notably were the side to end Surrey Storm’s unbeaten run in the 2023 season in their last meeting (52-47). Severn Stars vs Celtic Dragons

On Sunday, we enter Round 15 of the double-header as Severn Stars host Celtic Dragons at the University of Worcester Arena.

Expect fireworks and a fierce performance from Stars, who have already doubled their points tally from last season but look to cement a top five finish, topping their previous highest-ever finish of sixth in 2017 and 2018.

At the start of the season, Jo Trip set her team a goal of winning 50% of their games – a win on Sunday evening would keep them on course to do this with just six games to go. Jess Shaw is certainly one to watch in this clash. The midcourter has been a standout across the season and leads the standings for feeds in the NSL (before R14).

Last season, Celtic Dragons beat Stars twice, but suffered a heavy defeat in the 2023 season when the two sides last met (40-61). Under the new management of Jill McIntosh, Dragons will be hoping to double their win rate in the 2023 season but face a tough challenge against the new-look Stars.

Don’t count them out just yet though, the tenacious Dragons will be hungry for a win and can be reassured that Trinidad and Tobago’s dynamic defender Shaquanda Greene-Noel will be on hand to push the team in that direction. Greene-Noel sits at the top of the NSL standings for turnovers and fourth for deflections and her characteristic energy, athleticism and tenacious attitude will certainly be a challenge for Stars’ super shooter, Sigi Burger.

Saracens Mavericks vs Loughborough Lightning

It’s a brilliant bank holiday as Saracens Mavericks take on Loughborough Lightning in the first of two streamed games on Monday.

With FCP at 14:00, fans will be treated to an exciting clash at Hertfordshire Sporting Village with captain Sasha Corbin coming up against her former side. Shooter Ine-Marie Venter sits sixth on the NSL top scorer leader board, with 387 goals (excluding R14) but will need to put in a strong performance against Loughborough Lightning’s formidable defence. Lightning’s defensive super star Fran Williams sits top of the league for the most intercepts and last weekend, she won Gilbert Player of the Match for her outstanding performance against Sirens.

Lightning will be hungry for the win in this match. If they beat Manchester Thunder in Round 14 and Celtic Dragons beat Stars, then they could secure a place in the semi-finals with another win over Mavericks.

Mavericks’ last win against Lightning came at home in January 2019, but can the roar of the home crowd in Hertfordshire help Mavericks to settle the score?

Manchester Thunder vs London Pulse

With both just one loss apiece before R14, something’s got to give between these two sides as we head into one of the most exciting clashes of the season.

In the second streamed game of the bank holiday, it’s a tantalising top four clash that sees London Pulse head to Manchester Thunder‘s fortress: Belle Vue. The last time a team beat Thunder at Belle Vue was Severn Stars in April 2019 – can Pulse disrupt the narrative and break the fortress?

Both sides will have played on Saturday against their fellow top four opposition and could be in a position to qualify for the Final Four. If Pulse beat Storm, they would be through to the semi-finals and if Thunder beat Lightning in R14, they would require a single point from this game to join them.

Injury news came from the Thunder camp this week as defender Elia McCormick has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a ruptured achilles that she has recently had surgery for.

London Pulse’s Berri Neil and Alicia Scholes come up against their former side in Thunder.

How the current top four teams could qualify at the end of the double header round:

The race is on as the top four teams in the league battle for their place in the semi-finals and keep the dream of NSL champions alive.

London Pulse: Pulse will qualify for the semi-finals by the end of Round 14 if they beat or draw with Storm.

Surrey Storm: Storm will qualify by the end of Round 14 if they beat or draw with Pulse.

Manchester Thunder: Thunder can qualify by the end of Round 15 if they beat Loughborough Lightning, AND either win or draw with Pulse OR Stars lose to Dragons.

Loughborough Lightning: Lightning can qualify by the end of Round 15 if they beat Manchester Thunder AND Saracens Mavericks, AND Severn Stars lose to Dragons.

All four of the current top four teams will qualify by the end of Round 15 IF they all reach 33 points, AND Stars lose to Dragons.
