Netball Super League | Where to watch the Netball Super League Season Opener 2024

The Netball Super League (NSL) returns tomorrow, Saturday 17 February, at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham for a jam-packed day of fast and thrilling live netball.

With five back-to-back matches, there is so much to look forward to, and we’ve got all the details of the upcoming matches and players to look out for here.

Severn Stars v Leeds Rhinos – First Centre Pass at 11:00

The Season Opener will begin with a battle of the Kiwi Head Coaches as Jo Trip’s Severn Stars face Liana Leota’s Leeds Rhinos. Severn Stars equalled their highest-ever finish last season, reaching sixth place in the league table, and could be a real contender for a spot in the top four this season. Meanwhile, Leota’s recruitment in the off-season has brought some big names back into the NSL who fans can’t wait to see take to court. With Geva Mentor at one end and Joyce Mvula at the other, Leeds Rhinos are sure to be a force to be reckoned with this season.

Severn Stars player to watch: Niamh Cooper has made the move to Severn Stars after previously playing at Surrey Storm. Cooper has been appointed vice-captain for the season ahead, and is sure to make her mark both on and off the court this year.

Leeds Rhinos player to watch: Joyce Mvula’s return to the NSL after a year away playing in New Zealand is an exciting prospect for Leeds Rhinos fans who are looking forward to seeing her trademark elevation and impressive shooting stats back in the league.

Loughborough Lightning v Surrey Storm – First Centre Pass at 12:45

Next up, it’s time for the first of last year’s top four teams to meet, and this match includes the reigning champions! Loughborough Lightning won their second-ever NSL title in 2023 and this year, they are looking for a third. With some fresh faces in the squad, it’ll be Head Coach Vic Burgess’ job to help the new combinations gel. Competing against them will be Surrey Storm with a squad that has also seen a number of changes since their top four finish last season. Both teams will be keen to get off to a flying start, but who will come out on top?

Loughborough Lightning player to watch: Hannah Joseph has put out some great performances in the most recent international window, playing in test series against New Zealand and South Africa and in the Vitality Netball Nations Cup. Expect her to carry this fine form seamlessly back to the NSL as she links up with fan favourite Mary Cholhok in the Lightning attacking end.

Surrey Storm player to watch: Haniisha Muhameed is another player who has stood out this international season and she also displayed some impressive performances in Surrey Storm’s pre-season matches. Able to play both goal keeper and goal shooter, Muhameed’s versatility is sure to be appreciated by Surrey Storm fans as the season progresses.

Strathclyde Sirens v Team Bath – First Centre Pass at 14:30

Two young sides face each other next with the NSL’s only Scottish side Strathclyde Sirens taking on six-time Super League winners Team Bath. These two teams finished just one place apart at the end of the 2023 season and both have returned with a hunger to climb up the table this year.

Strathclyde Sirens player to watch: Bethan Goodwin was rock-solid for her Scottish Thistles side at the Netball World Cup this summer and has spent the last couple of years cementing her position as Sirens’ go-to goal shooter. Expect her to use this experience to build exciting new connections with her new shooting partners this year.

Team Bath player to watch: Tash Pavelin is eager to get back out on court and playing in front of fans in NSL 2024. After an ACL injury ruled her out of NSL 2023, this young Future Rose is ready and raring to go this year.

London Pulse v Manchester Thunder – First Centre Pass at 16:15

London Pulse made history last year, booking their club’s first-ever place in the Super League final, and they are looking to go one better this year. Manchester Thunder will be determined to achieve the same after missing out on a spot in the Grand Final last year, making for an enticing battle on court as both teams fight to start their 2024 campaign with a win.

London Pulse player to watch: Berri Neil’s performances in the Vitality Roses squad in the Taini Jamison Trophy, South Africa Series, and Vitality Netball Nations Cup have been stand-out over the past few months. Pulse fans will be thrilled that she is back and ready to use her speed and drives to dominate the baseline once again for Pulse this season.

Manchester Thunder player to watch: Imogen Allison’s performances at the Netball World Cup this summer helped her to cement her position in the Vitality Roses’ starting line-up and at Manchester Thunder, she’ll be linking back up with Roses teammates Nat Metcalf and Amy Carter in the mid-court. This is a combination that is sure to bring speed, strength, and dynamism to the NSL in 2024.

LexisNexis Cardiff Dragons v Saracens Mavericks – First Centre Pass at 18:00

In this final match of the day, two teams who have made big statements with their recruitment in the off-season go head-to-head. The LexisNexis Cardiff Dragons are welcoming back Nia Jones as captain, having also brought Jacqui Newton over from Australia and Khanyisa Chawane from South Africa. Under Head Coach Jill McIntosh, fans will be keen to see these new combinations grow. Saracens Mavericks have also brought some big names to their club this year. NSL 2023’s Players’ Player of the Season Vicki Oyesola returns to the club, along with young England stars Ellie Rattu and Emma Thacker. With these exciting new players in the mix, Camilla Buchanan’s team will be determined to strive for a top four finish this season.

LexisNexis Cardiff Dragons player to watch: Khanyisa Chawane produced a series of impressive performances for the South Africa SPAR Proteas over the summer. The mid-courter brings fast movement, accurate feeds and relentless defensive pressure to the court and is one of many exciting new players making their NSL debut this season.

Saracens Mavericks player to watch: Razia Quashie is joined by a number of exciting new faces this year and following some spectacular performances for the Vitality Roses in the Vitality Netball Nations Cup, she is certainly one to watch this season. In particular, we can’t wait to watch her combine with Vicki Oyesola in defence, as Mavericks look to break into the top four.
