Netball Super League | Where to Watch: Round 4

Round four of the Netball Super League (NSL) is about to get underway with a top of the table clash among five great games for fans to get excited about.

Fans enjoyed two nail-biting games in round three, with both London Pulse and the LexisNexis Cardiff Dragons clinching last minute one-goal wins.

Round four is sure to bring more excitement as Severn Stars take on Manchester Thunder on Friday 8 March, broadcast live on Sky Sports, whilst BBC Sport brings you a match up between Surrey Storm and the LexisNexis Cardiff Dragons on Saturday 9 March.

Severn Stars v Manchester Thunder – First Centre Pass at 19:30, Friday 8 March

Manchester Thunder travel to Worcester to face Severn Stars on Friday night, where we will see the only two unbeaten teams remaining in NSL 2024 battle it out to continue their perfect start to the season. This top of the table clash is not one to be missed, with both teams coming into the game following big wins in round three. Manchester Thunder put on a show for the crowd at their first home game of the season, defeating Strathclyde Sirens 81-41 and Severn Stars enjoyed similar success against Team Bath with a 72-44 win. Both teams will need to continue their high scoring starts to the season if they want to come out on top on Friday.

Severn Stars player to watch: Jo Trip is in only her second season in the player-coach role at Severn Stars, but she has already seen some great successes. Stars finished sixth last season in what was their joint best ever NSL finish and are currently top of the league table in 2024 by goal difference, equal with Manchester Thunder on points. It is clear for fans to see that Trip, who was voted NSL Coach of the Season in 2023, continues to build a culture of success and enjoyment both on and off the court. She will be leading from the front this weekend as her team takes on the test of four-time NSL champions in Manchester Thunder.

Manchester Thunder player to watch: Paige Reed is not only an exciting new signing for Manchester Thunder this year, but she’s also a player with history at Severn Stars. Reed played for Severn Stars for four seasons from 2019 to 2022 and will be keen to perform at her best for her new club as she takes on her old team. Whether she gets the chance to share the shooting circle with South African star Elmerè van der Berg or with young Future Rose Lois Pearson, if Reed can have a strong performance up against Stars’ dynamic defence end, she will go a long way to cementing her position in Thunder’s line-up.

Surrey Storm v LexisNexis Cardiff Dragons – First Centre Pass at 18:00, Saturday 9 March

Surrey Storm and the LexisNexis Cardiff Dragons will both be looking to put out a strong performance to consolidate their first wins of the season in round three. Surrey Storm put out a composed performance against their local rivals Saracens Mavericks, coming away with a hard-fought 59-48 win and Mikki Austin will demand the same intensity from her side in this next match. Meanwhile the LexisNexis Cardiff Dragons’ round three game saw multiple lead swings and went goal-for-goal until a crucial pick-up from Khanyisa Chawane allowed Dragons to steal the win. Will they be able to build on this moment and secure their second win away from home on Saturday?

Surrey Storm player to watch: Proscovia Peace returned to the court from maternity leave in round two and made an instant impact against London Pulse. She then re-entered Storm’s starting seven in round three, delighting fans as her unstoppable accuracy under the post helped her side to victory. Her match up against Dragons’ goal keeper, Leah Middleton will certainly be one to watch this weekend.

LexisNexis Cardiff Dragons player to watch: Leah Middleton has had an impressive start to the season at her new club. Currently sat fourth in the league leaderboard for intercepts, seventh for gains and seventh for deflections, her partnership with fellow new signing Jacqui Newton has been exciting to watch. There is no doubt that she will be fired up to continue this form against her former club, and her ability to shut down former teammate Proscovia Peace will be key if Dragons are to take the win.

The rest of the round

The rest of round four sees plenty more exciting matches to keep an eye on. A sold-out Team Bath Arena will host London Pulse at 7:30pm on Friday 8 March. Pulse will be riding high after defeating the reigning champions Loughborough Lightning last week, whilst Bath will look to draw on the energy from their home crowd to challenge last year’s runners up.

At 3pm on Saturday 9 March, Leeds Rhinos and Strathclyde Sirens face each other in a match where both teams will be desperate to secure their first win of the season. Rhinos came close to this last week, but what have they learnt from their narrow loss to the LexisNexis Cardiff Dragons?

Finally, on Sunday 10 March at 4pm there is a Mothers’ Day treat in the form of Saracens Mavericks taking on Loughborough Lightning. Both teams want to end the season in one of those top four positions, and this is their chance to bounce back from their respective losses in round three.
