Netball Super League | London Mavericks announce Camilla Buchanan as Head Coach and Tamsin Greenway as Director of Netball

Netball Super League (NSL) Club London Mavericks have confirmed the first of their coaching team appointments ahead of the 2025 Netball Super League season.

They have announced that Tamsin Greenway will lead the coaching team as London Mavericks’ Director of Netball, and that she will be joined by Camilla Buchanan as Head Coach.

Greenway is a former England international, Scotland Head Coach and Saracens Mavericks Head of Strategic Performance. She will oversee all aspects of London Mavericks’ elite performance, including performance management, strategic performance development and London Mavericks’ pathway programme.

There are few more decorated athletes in the game than Greenway, who has two World Cup bronze medals, a Commonwealth Games bronze, a World Series silver and seven Netball Super League titles to her name, six as a player and/or coach and one as Director of Netball at Surrey Storm.

Since retiring from playing, Greenway has developed a reputation as one of the country’s leading high-performance coaches with one of the sharpest strategic netball brains. She arrived at Mavericks with unrivalled experience after 20 years at the top of English netball, during which time she represented England 67 times and played/coached for Team Bath, Surrey Storm and Wasps, before her more recent role at Saracens Mavericks.

Away from the court, Tamsin is a leading voice within the sport, inspiring thousands more people to get involved in netball through her Sky Sports commentary and podcast, for which she was named pundit of the year at the 2023 Broadcast Sport Awards.

Greenway said: “It’s such an exciting time to be involved in netball as we prepare to start this new professional chapter. It’s been a long time coming and we’ve made some brave, scary choices at times, but these tough decisions have been made to enhance the league and to continue growing the sport. We’re really looking forward to working together with the wider netball community to ensure it’s a success for everyone involved.

“To have this opportunity to do something fresh and new with London Mavericks is invigorating and fits perfectly with what I love doing. I’m enjoying working with brilliant people behind the scenes and am inspired by what they’re trying to create as London Mavericks.

“Being involved in this league and this club is about long-term commitment. We have two highly successful female owners leading us, who are passionate about investing in the long-term future of women’s sport. It’s exciting to be part of that and to work with people who are looking at things in a slightly different manner, who want us to win on and off the court by developing a club and role models who can inspire and empower women and girls in all walks of life.

“I think fans can expect something a little different from London Mavericks this season, which should be a lot of fun. We want to play a brand of netball that’s entertaining and pushes boundaries, but of course, that also wins matches. We’re under no illusion that we want to finish higher than last year and, like most teams in July, we’re currently busy with recruitment activity.

“Equally as important is building a great culture, a strong pathway and a really collaborative partnership with our Mavericks community. We are determined to put players and fans at the heart of everything we do, creating an environment in which we genuinely care about the people associated with our club. We want to inspire our fanbase to buy into what we’re about and to be excited about coming on this journey with us, through all the highs and lows that sport inevitably provides. It will be a fun ride!”

Working closely with Tamsin will be the newly announced London Mavericks Head Coach, Camilla Buchanan.

Buchanan has extensive experience across the game and has proved herself a natural leader since joining Mavericks in 2008, having won a Super League title and been appointed a Mavericks’ Vice-Captain and Assistant Coach before making her debut as Saracens Mavericks Head Coach in the 2022/23 season.

Highly respected as a player for her passion and resilience on court, Buchanan has carried that energy through to her coaching career, where she is highly regarded for her talent in player development.

Speaking about her Head Coach appointment at the newly formed London Mavericks, one of eight teams set to compete in the NSL 2025, Buchanan said: “It’s a whole new era. It couldn’t be a more exciting time for our sport. We now have this incredible opportunity to move netball into the professional realm and for the NSL to become the best league in the world.

“I’ve been a Maverick for a long time, but in terms of becoming London Mavericks this is the most excited I’ve ever been about a fresh start and a new vision, working with real visionaries. Our female investors, Lucy and Olivia, have brilliant ambitions not only for netball, but also for helping to inspire women and girls across sport, business and society as a whole. It’s a ridiculously exciting time to be involved in netball and with London Mavericks.”

Camilla Buchanan was Saracens Mavericks Head Coach from 2022 to 2024.

Buchanan is relishing the opportunity to take on the 2025 Netball Super League with another year’s Head Coach experience under her belt and is looking forward to working with Tamsin Greenway and implementing the new London Mavericks’ Director of Netball’s long-term strategy for player and club development.

“Tamsin is probably the best strategic mind in this sport in the world, so to be working alongside her is unreal,” explained Buchanan. “We’re just looking at shaking things up, doing things a bit differently, seeing how things can work in the best way possible, and hopefully creating one of the best coaching teams in the world. I can’t wait to get started.”

Tamsin Greenway said: “Camilla is a really creative coach, who is always looking to come up with new thoughts and ideas for how to play the game. She is extremely passionate about the sport and is always hungry to learn on the job.

“Camilla is also incredibly thoughtful in her approach. She is one of the most caring humans I know in terms of how she supports players and the people around her. She will play a huge role in the culture we’re keen to develop at London Mavericks, where we genuinely care about our people and about our community which is at the heart of everything we do.”

London Mavericks are also set to announce the club’s new Assistant Coach this week, with Greenway looking forward to developing a strong coaching partnership.

“It’s going to absolutely be a collaboration of how we as coaches work together. We will have a Head Coach and an Assistant Coach, but I’ll also be involved in the sessions and on match days. In the past, there’s been this idea that a netball coach should know everything, but that’s just not the way. We’ll work together as a team and work to each other’s strengths, with all three of us bringing value to each session.”

Buchanan added: “We’re keen to create an environment where everyone enjoys coming to work, where they want to thrive, to improve, to inspire each other and raise each other to a high level every single day on and off the court. It’s a drip feed. If we get it right at the top, we’ll get it right through the court as well.

“The beauty of this role is the day-to-day contact with players, to see them develop not only as a player, but also as a person. Going through some of their life-changing moments with them is a privilege, and something I don’t take lightly. It’s really empowering to be a part of the bigger picture, to support people on their journey and to help get the best out of them. When you see them put in a brilliant performance or you see that character growth you’ve been working so hard on, it’s a cha-ching moment.”

Off the court Buchanan continues to lead and inspire. Her work with Sky Sports, making the documentary ‘Black Roses: Netball after the Windrush’ was highly acclaimed and is now used in many schools and clubs as an educational piece to start important conversations and action change.

Speaking about the documentary, Buchanan explained: “I loved every second of making it. There was a chance to celebrate, but also to ask questions that could bring about further progression, about how we can move the game on in terms of the experience of Black athletes.

“Coming from a minority group and knowing my history of the challenges faced, I feel a real responsibility on my shoulders. Netball always comes first, but being in a position to make meaningful changes so that every player is seen and heard is so important.

“At London Mavericks, the social impact piece is huge and one of our biggest focusses will be on engaging with our community and fans. It’s a huge part of what we’re trying to achieve and we’re really going to put a lot of pride into that aspect. Everyone’s been touched by someone helping them or inspiring them and you’ve got to pay it forward. Life is about giving and leaving something better than what you’ve come into. I can’t wait to see how much we can do on that front.”
