Share Goal shooter Eleanor Cardwell says Severn Stars are “desperate” for victory when they take on Hertfordshire Mavericks in their final home game of the season on Friday (May 26) after coming agonisingly close in their first encounter. Stars succumbed to a 48-45 defeat at Hertfordshire Sports Village in the eighth round of the Vitality Netball Superleague last month, having lead with just 90 seconds to go. But Cardwell believes her side can reverse their fortunes and come out on top at the University of Worcester Arena. “We’re desperate to get the win,” said in-form Cardwell, who is currently the fourth highest scorer in the division. “We lost by such a small margin last time, but we know we can turn it around and we really want it to go our way this time. “I think it’s going to be a really competitive game. We’ve been working hard this week in training and hopefully we can come out with a win.” The two sides head into the fixture level on points, with Mavericks one place ahead due to a superior goal difference, so a home win would see Stars climb above them in the league table. Cardwell is keen for Stars to end the season on a high to give them a boost heading into the next campaign. “We’ve only got two games left now, so we just need to carry that high level of performance through to the end of the season to give us a platform for next season,” she added. “We’re a completely new team. There’s only a few of us that have played together before in previous seasons. This season was just about building and trying to create those partnerships, which I think we have done. “There’s still a lot more work to do to try and get the best out of us all, but we’re definitely moving in a positive direction.” Remaining tickets for the clash, which starts at 7.30pm, can be purchased at www.severnstars.co.uk/fixturestickets.
