London Pulse maintained their winning start to the 2023 Netball Super League with a dominant 72-42 victory over Team Bath on the first Friday Night Netball of the season.

Olivia Tchine scored 44 goals as Pulse made it two wins from two, while Sacha McDonald and Berri Neil also looked sharp in the circle on an excellent evening for the hosts.

It was the highest-ever score recorded by Pulse in a NSL match, with Tchine’s metronomic consistency in front of the post helping her to the player of the match award.

Visitors Bath started the quickest, Kadeen Corbin producing an interception inside the opening minute to help the Blue & Gold to an early two-goal lead, before Pulse quickly levelled proceedings.

A fairly even start then saw Pulse begin to establish a consistent lead, with Jade Clarke dominating the midcourt with stunning feet and fast ball.

Bath stayed in touch, however, with young goalkeeper Jayda Pechova giving Tchine a real test in the circle and earning two interceptions in the process.

Bath youngster Sophie Kelly replaced Corbin between quarters and produced some acrobatics to keep the ball in play for Betsy Creak to score, but it couldn’t stop an increasingly slick Pulse.

Defensive duo Lindsay Keable and Funmi Fadoju were both successful time and time again in their hunt for ball, with Tchine consistent in front of the posts amidst regular feeds to send Pulse in 38-20 at half-time.

Pulse director of netball Sam Bird rang the changes at the break, with only Fadoju and Tchine coming back out but it did little to disrupt the hosts’ momentum.

An early interception from Ali Wilshier helped the visitors go score for score at the start of the third quarter, with Pechova and Summer Artman battling well in defence.

Yet Pulse soon re-found their momentum, Hali Adio marking her return to the Copper Box with a number of important defensive interventions to allow Neil, Chelsea Pitman, and Ashleigh Dekker to regularly find Tchine.

While the result may have been all but decided as the sides begun the final quarter with Pulse leading 57-29, there was no change in intensity as both battled to the final whistle.

Asha Francis’ side refused to lie down, with Hannah Passmore and Kelly shot Bath to their highest-scoring quarter of the game but player of the match Tchine refused to relinquish the pressure at the other end as Pulse ticked over 70 goals for the first time in their history.
