Loughborough Lightning confirm top-four place with 57-51 win over Severn Stars

Loughborough Lightning confirmed their place in the top four with a 57-51 win over Severn Stars.

After the hosts had built a commanding lead in the first quarter, Stars hit back but could not stop the 2021 champions from reaching the play-offs for a sixth time in a row.

The game began with a fast and aggressive attack from Stars landing them the first point of the game but Lightning swiftly followed close behind securing two back-to-back goals from Emma Thacker to push the home team ahead.

The first turnover of the match came from goal defence Francesca Williams who continued her remarkable form for Lightning who worked cohesively to steam ahead of Stars with a 10-point run.

The absence of regular sharp-shooter Mary Cholhok failed to slow Lightning down as Thacker and Rhea Dixon held their own in the attacking circle.

Jas Odeogberin made a perfectly timed intercept to disrupt the play of Stars, allowing for yet another point for Lightning before Stars closed the gap to seven at the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter, brilliant evasive play from the midcourt of Nat Panagarry, Odeogberin and Hannah Joseph kept the ball in possession and deliver another vital point for Lightning.

However, Stars began to close the gap in the scoreline as the half-time whistle saw Lightning holding their lead with four points between them and Stars.

The second half of the game kicked off with defensive trio Alice Harvey, Williams and Odeogberin playing havoc with the Stars attackers and preventing a point from the centre pass.

Then, Dixon and Panagarry teamed up once again with their quick passes to set up another point for Lightning before Stars began to dominate as they continued their comeback closing the gap to three with 15 minutes to play.

The final quarter saw both teams going goal-for-goal with an intense start before Zanele Vimbela put an end to the Stars attack with a turnover in the defending circle.

Not long after that Thacker was doing the same at the other end of the court as Lightning extended their lead once again with Thacker player a huge role in conversions for the team.

Williams made an instrumental intercept in the defensive half to disrupt the play of Stars and allow for Lightning to gain momentum.

The intensity of the game skyrocketed as Stars closed in on Lightning but perseverance paid off as Lightning stood strong against the visiting team and used the electric energy of the crowd to their advantage to close the game with a six-point lead for Lightning.
